草間彌生出生於日本長野縣松本市。她從小就受精神病困擾，10歲開始便出現幻聽與幻覺，常有自殺傾向。草間彌生於1948年離開家園，赴京都市立工藝美術學校學習傳統日本畫，1957年她移居紐約，開始從事前衛藝術創作，與唐納德．賈德（Donald Judd）、約瑟夫．康奈爾（Joseph Cornell）及安迪．沃荷（Andy Warhol）等先鋒藝術家結為好友，完成了很多重要的系列，「無限的網」便是其一。
